It’s competition time at MyMiniFactory and I thought I’d use it as an excuse to spend an afternoon creating something new and simple to 3D print. The “#enabledby3d” competition brief calls for an “item that makes an everyday chore easier, or an enabling device, allowing those with disabilities greater accessibility.”

I decided to focus on something most of us take for granted – writing and drawing with a pen. If you have arthritis or some other sort of hand dexterity problems from injury or illness, picking up a cheap standard pen and using it can be frustrating, painful or even impossible. One option is to pay a lot more money for large diameter pens, or buy those slide-on grips which look ugly and draw attention to the fact that you may have grip difficulties.

So what I’ve created is a simple sheath that slides over the full length of a standard Bic pen or similar, significantly increasing the diameter of the pen and changing the geometry so that it may be more easily maneuvered. The sheath prints without needing any support material, and the cheap pen simply sides inside ready to use. What I hope is achieved by this design is something that not only enables people with hand dexterity issues, but something that is appealing to anyone – in this way the design doesn’t seem like an assistive device, but something desirable that someone might be using simply to stand out and be unique. Design Your Own Custom Pen

Last year I posted a bit of an inside look at a small project I was working on for my PhD (click here to have a look back at the post) but couldn’t say much since it was for an upcoming conference. Well that conference has been and gone, and my full paper has just been published online for you to read.

In essence it was an exploration of something called interactive fabrication, whereby someone with no CAD or design experience can actually create their own unique 3D printed pen using the ‘testing pen’ shown in the top right image. As you grip this pen, sensors translate the force of your grip in real time into a 3D model that is ergonomically correct for you. You then draw a closed shape such as a hexagon on a piece of paper, hold this up to your computer’s webcam, and this shape is automatically translated up the shaft of the pen. It’s as simple (and behind the scenes very complex) as that! The top left photo shows 4 different pens from 4 different people used during the testing of this project.

The complete process is controlled within Rhino 3D, using the Grasshopper plugin with Firefly to communicate with an Arduino, which I’ve explored in previous projects. There are plenty of improvements that can be made to this design, but as a prototype it certainly proves the potential to embed sensors within a product and automatically create custom functional products for people without the need for them to learn complex CAD software. As it happens, this is a large focus of my PhD!

A 3D Printed Pen… or is it?

While this may look like a chunky 3D printed pen, there is more going on here than meets the eye… I’m just not going to explain it all yet (part of my PhD experimentation)! But for those who have looked through some of my more recent experiments with Arduino, Rhino with Grasshopper, and 3D printing, you might get some clues about where this could be going!

The pen itself has been modeled to fit with a standard Bic pen tip, and printed on my Up! Plus 2 3D printer in 89 minutes using the 0.2mm layer setting and ‘fine’ speed. Of course the colour change is done using the ‘hot swap’ technique just for a bit of fun and to liven up the product from the standard white prototype feel – since this is not so much a prototype but part of a (hopefully) functional system. There was only a minimal amount of support at the base, and because of the way I designed the interior no support was needed which is a big relief – it would be a nightmare to pick out any interior supports to allow the pen to fit in! It actually feels quite good to hold, but the last image provides a bit of a clue as to where it’s going – I’m currently wiring it up to connect to my Arduino. As for details, that’s all I can share at this point!
